I offer two classes at my workshop:
Bicycle frame building: We'll cover all the essentials including fit, design, materials, fixtures, and welding options as part of the hands-on building of a bicycle frame you get to keep.
Intro to TIG welding: This is an introduction to TIG welding, the cleanest and nicest way with which to build any project. Machine options, set-up, materials, rod choice, safety and welding technique will be covered.
These classes are one-on-one, tailored to fit each individual's specific needs and interests.
Classes are in session 9 to 4, Monday - Friday
For those looking to learn the craft of frame building I offer a class teaching my process. I teach the same fundamentals, principles, and techniques that I use. There is no short cut or magic that can turn you into a professional frame builder in a week, this takes years and a lot of frames. You have to learn the skill and practice the art.
I have an Anvil Journeyman (www.anvilbikes.com) and you'll be using this great fixture to build your frame. The technique I teach utilizes TIG welding. TIG welding is the most widely used, most versatile, and cleanest approach to frame building. I use a Miller Syncrowave 200 welder (www.millerwelds.com). You have the option to braze on cable stops and guides using a oxy - acetelyne torch as well. You will build the frame of your choice (road, cross, track, or hard tail mountain) from either steel or 7005 aluminum in five days of instruction.
One-on-One Instruction
Frame Fit
Design and Geometry
Tubing Options & Selection
Fixture Options & Setup
Machinery Setup, Use and Safety
Tool Use
Tube Mitering, Bending , and weld Prep
Welding & Brazing
Finishing & Finishes
The cost for the five day class is $1450, which is around the cost of a custom frame. However, by taking the class you're the one learning and building it. This price includes the tubing set, drop outs, required braze-ons, and a Chris King headset.
Unlike the other major schools that offer this class, this is a one-on-one learning experience. You get my full attention, there is no sharing of tools or having to wait for a machine. We work at your pace and focus on your frame. All the materials you will need are provided. When you finish your frame you will be able to purchase any parts/gruppo's you need to complete your bike at a discount.
This class is geared towards someone who has a working knowledge of TIG welding. We do cover TIG welding, but in an abbreviated amount of time relating to its direct useage with bicycle frames. If you are a novice welder I would suggest taking the Intro to TIG instruction before taking this course. Feel free to call me to discuss the particulars.
The cost of the class does not include paint or a powder coat finish. Paint and powder coat range from $125 and up; I can put you in touch with a painter or powder coater to finish the frame to your specifications.
Class is in session from 9 am -4:00 pm with an hour lunch break at noon. I offer the class during the week (Monday through Friday) and I will schedule the class dates for your convenience.
A $350 deposit is required to reserve a class date; the balance is due prior to the start of the first day of class. A cancellation fee of $50 will be charged if a class is cancelled with more than 5 business days notice; a cancellation fee of $200 will be charged if a class is cancelled with less than 5 business days notice.
